For the last week at CIID, our goal was to rethink the future of radio. Our group wanted to combine several ideas that we seem to gravitate to in real life: vinyls, nostalgia for 90's toys, and making interactions more complicated for no good reason. And so Recio was born! Instead of being able to turn a knob or press a button to choose a station, Recio is a radio that plays vinyl disks that each encode an FM frequency. As the record spins, a sensor picks up its particular pattern of light and dark and plays the radio station.

The name "Recio" is Spanish for "robust" or "sturdy". It obviously sounds a little like "record", but we also thought it fit the absurdity of the mixed technologies of the project.
